Draft Video Story

Idea and Inspiration

For this project I decided to ask one individual who has played soccer with me before in high school a few questions regarding what has been her experience with that sport. I decided to do an interview for this project because I liked how “A Day In The Life Of ATC” audio clip came out in the Audio Editing reading. I was inspired by that reading because I liked how the intro started with sound and music effects, it captures attention from the audience. With that being said, it gave me the idea of using a soft sound (birds singing) as an introduction to the interview, which would set the mood for the questions being asked. It fits well with my course topic because it is relatable to some of the lessons I learned while playing with a team, something that many athletes can relate to.

Design Process/ Technical Detail

For starters I decided to mess around with the image I used as an intro, which was using a picture of myself and my teammate when we used to play together. At first, I thought about leaving the picture parallel, but it did not grab much attention, that is why I decided to position the image in a different way and use the rotation tool and the scale tool in a way that it would capture the audience attention. After placing the interview clip, I went through it a couple times to take a few “ums” out with the razor tool. When I finished using the razor tool and clipping out a few words I decided to use the scale tool at second 19 to zoom into the person who was being interviewed for the audience to receive a better view. I used several transitions in between the questions to indicate that the person being interviewed was changing her message I started using different video transitions to see which transition would fit best, but I enjoyed best the cross dissolve because it flows smoothly into the interview. Another transition I decided to use was the film dissolve and set the saturation at -75 to indicate a new question. Lastly, for my video clip I added the same soft sound of birds signing that I used for my intro as my outro to set a smooth ending. I decided to put this audio at the end again so the crediting page at the end would not be awkwardly there. I decided to add a smooth transition of Dip to Black for 2 seconds so it can flow slow to my crediting page. For the text I decided to add some color and use linear Gradient as a fill type for the credit page to grab the audience attention instead of skipping the crediting page.

Sources and Materials

Some of the challenges that I faced through this process was getting familiar with the tools, it is very difficult to find my way back to any edit that I did not want to make. Also, for some reason the tools went away, and I had no idea how to get them back on my screen. With that being, I exited out of the software and re-started because I did not know how to fix it. One recommendation I would make is get familiar with the tools before starting or ask as many questions as you can. Also, I made sure I asked the individual who was presented in my video clip if I could have her permission to record her and use this video for a project, as she was willing to cooperate with that.

  1. I like the idea you used for the video. It ties in nicely with the rest of your projects and is a good way to offer an outside perspective. I think your use of sound design is very well done, especially in the question asking section and during the conclusion and intro. The bird sounds were a nice touch to signal a beginning and end of the piece and a large number of pauses and unnecessary words were cut out well.

I think some of the transitions need work. At the beginning there were a few moments when the camera zoomed in slightly for a reason that I wasn’t able to figure out. In addition, I don’t think tinting the screen black and white during the transition to the second question is necessary; the distinction between questions is clear enough. I would also consider adding a short introduction explaining who the person you’re interviewing is. Other than that, I think this is highly successful.

  2. I enjoyed reading over the feedback I received from my classmates as I will use their suggestions to edit and have a better video for my final publishing. Some of the suggestions my classmates recommended me to edit is the part of the video clip where a new question is being asked that I used a transition of black and white, being that I lowered down the saturation to show a new topic was approaching. I am planning on changing the saturation for a transition dissolve effect. Also, another suggestion that I received from my classmates was to add a short introduction explaining pr giving an intro of who the interviewer is. I believe in terms of timing, I will try to add an audio explaining who the person is and what the topic is about to give a better sense to the public of what the interview will consist of. Overall, I think I did great on the video, in where I do not have to make much edit other than a few transitions, I thank you all for the feedback.

  3. I really enjoyed this video! I thought you asked very insightful questions and your friend was ableto describe her passion for soccer! You had a very strong introduction and had a very good person you interviewed. It went perfectly with your topic and I really thought your friend did a good job speaking without reading from a script! Definitely a video all athletes can relate to.
As for critiques I would just suggest maybe a more lively location, however I do like the comfortability and looseness of the atmosphere shown. Background music may be helpful as well! I really thought the images were a good touch so maybe add just a few more in the beginning or end of the video story? Overall, I feel that you have an amazing base to work with for your final video story! Keep up the good work 🙂

  4. Hi Brenda, your project is really well done! It looks like you spent a good amount of time editing it. The interview is easy to follow and the topic is interesting. A suggestion could be to take out the photo at the beginning and perhaps put it at the end. I think the pictures create a disconnect in the video. Another suggestion would be to create a title page in the video instead of the pictures. Overall, great job!
