Draft Logo Project

For my Draft Logo Project I decided to create a logo that illustrates an organization. My idea was to relate it to my topic of soccer and put in a title that demonstrates motivation. The reason why I decided to put the title of “Dream High” is because this organization will help individuals reach their goals or similar goals regardless of their conditions. I also decided to use the shape of a soccer ball to illustrate the organization being dedicated to the sport of soccer. I got inspired to use this type of design by the Tracing Logo Tutorial video. When I was working on the tutorial, adding circles to the design is when my inspiration came to create a soccer ball by using the Ellipse Tool and the Polygon Tool. Also, after reading the Balance, Figure and Ground assigned reading I knew I had to balance out the soccer ball shape with the wording of the title, I am not fully satisfied with balance of the title and the ball and will work on that for the final logo after receiving some feedback.

I started creating my Draft Logo by adding a circle to one of my layers with the Ellipse Tool, I did receive different sizes for the fact that I was not pressing the key “Shift” when creating the soccer ball. Also, I tried adding another layer of circle to the original circle and see if it would create a thick layer for it to look like an original ball. I did not like the result which is why I started adding weight to the stroke and using the dashed line tool to add design to the soccer ball. After adding the dashed lines, I created another layer to start using the Polygon tool. I struggled quite a bit adding Polygons to the circle because I had arrange each polygon and send it back of the circle in order for me to use the Shape Builder Tool. It did take me quite a bit to arrange it and get the results I wanted. After, I created another layer to add the Text and start using different fonts and style options, after selecting a few I enjoyed more how the rise style looked and lowered down the curve. At this point, I knew I needed to add some color because it was black and white, so I went back to the Tracing Logo tutorial to add color by using the gradient tool. Finally, I finished off by expanding the image so when I made the logo smaller, the dashed lines would keep the same size and shape.

I had a lot of fun creating the Draft Logo. I did face some struggles but solved them by going back to the tutorials and fix the problem. Some of the struggles I faced was having to undo the expand for me to be able to change the font or the size. Also, another struggle I had was having to shape the polygons on the right size inside the circle in order for it to look the same shape. I did copy and paste but I had to use the Shape Builder Tool in order to get the results I wanted. Overall, I had a great time designing the Draft Logo.

I decided to create a logo with the idea of a soccer organization with the goal of helping individuals set goals and “Dream High” to be able to accomplish what they strive for. I will be adding more color and changing fonts for me to be satisfy with my creation.

The Path to Success is Not Always Easy

For the past several years I have faced several struggles that have not allowed me to play my favorite sport. I believe soccer has impacted my life extremely to get me to be the person I am today. I had to put a major commitment into my studies and into surgeries for me to be able to reach some of my goals including graduating from high school. I choose to make a poster that would give the audience motivation to continue their path regardless of the struggles they might be facing. My topic is relatable to the poster I created because I decided to look for images of stairs on FreeImages website that can represent steps that guided me to see the light regardless if I felt as if I was never to get out. I got motivated to create this poster after reading “The Power of Images” article. Through the image that was provided in the article because through the colors it contained and the description of 20th Century gave me the idea that those children were not working by favor, but by force. That is one of the reasons why I decided to use dark colors in my poster and blend the corners to a dark color for it to show that during stages of my life I was struggling.

At the start of my draft I decided to start by messing around with photoshop, mixing colors and using the Hue/Saturation tool as well as color balance to get a better image of how I wanted the stairs to look. After messing around with the colors, I began my draft by adding several layers to put a single image in each. I added my image and had quite a trouble using the cropping tool, which is why I changed to using the Magnetic Lasso tool where I had better results because I could delete and add additional parts to my image if I did not like how the image was looking. Next, I went to the next layer and used the Magnetic Tool until I was satisfied to how my image looked. Once I was satisfied with the images in each layer, I started moving the images to different locations because I did not know which corner or location it would best fit.  After adding my image, I continued to lower down the Opacity in order for it to blend well with the background, which was the stairs. Lastly, my image was looking quite blank and even though I was satisfied with the message, I knew my audience needed to understand what I was trying to demonstrate. After adding a few text words, I decided to lower the Opacity of the text as well for it to blend with the background image. Most of the tools I used were Magnetic Lasso Tool and Hue/Saturation. Even though it was quite a process trying to find the right colors for my message to be clear to the audience.

I am amazed! The feedback I received from some pf my classmates were great, it made me feel great about the work I did for my Graphic Design Draft. It was very helpful the tips they gave me to improve for my final Graphic Design. Some of the tips I received were to try and change my wording because it was quote focusing as they would reach the message from the top of the poster to the bottom of the poster. I changed the wording and also changed the message for my audience to get a better understanding of my perspective and be motivated to reach their goals. Also, some of my classmates advised me to change the color of the stairs because it was quite hard to see and also quite blurry. I decided to change the background color and mess around with a few Hue/Saturation colors for it to match the blue light color I used on the self-portrait image. I did not make much change because my audience was satisfied with my work.

Finally, I started making a few changes to my final graphic design, not many changes because my audience were satisfied with my draft. Some of the changes I made were changing the Hue/Saturation to the stairs for it to match and blend well with my self-portrait image. I did not make much changes to my image other than increasing the Opacity for it to be clear and show that regardless of the struggles I was able to keep on smiling. A huge step that I made sure to change were the text words. I changed the message and also changed the font, size, and color for my audience to be able to read clearly my idea. Overall, I had a lot of fun messing around with adobe and being able to create a design that made me happy and would fit my topic of soccer.

My pathway

I decided to create an image that illustrates how the sport of soccer helped me reach my goals. Soccer has always been a big part of my life in a way that it has guided me to make better choices for my education. I have learned a lot through the struggles that I have faced, which is one of the reasons why it is relatable to my topic because it demonstrates motivation, passion, and dedication through blending modes and effects used in my graphic design draft. I was inspired to used different blending’s after reading “The Power of Images” article. It mentioned how every image demonstrates a message and seeing the pictures attached from 20th Century gave me the idea that those children were not working in those factories because they wanted too, it is a sad story to see that children are being forced to work at that age. I used dark colors at the bottom of my image to send a message that as a child I had difficult moments, but my life started to lighten up as I grew, which is towards the top of the page. I believe as if I not only captured the images I wanted to include but also, I was able to capture a clear message. Also, through The Five Basic Rules of Shot Composition, specially the Lines rule helped me place the text I wanted to use in my draft by creating a visual path to the solution, being the light to all the struggles through the stairs.

At first, I decided to start by mixing colors in one layer with any picture as practice before starting my actual draft. I did this through Hue/Saturation and through color balance even if we had not used it just because I wanted to give a different color to the stairs. After using different colors, I began my draft by adding an image to different layers and using the Magnetic Lasso Tool to have better image results. I also tried using the cropping tool, but in my opinion the Magnetic Lasso Tool works best because it allows me to add or delete any additional parts of the image after adding a Layer Via Copy. After adding two images I decided to lower down on the Opacity in order to blend the stairs and demonstrate a clear message. Lastly, when I was adding the stairs, I did not think of using a blending color because I wanted a bright color to be on my image (originally stairs were black and red) but, if I wanted to present the topic as a tuff experience, I needed to tone down on the lightness and add more saturation. Even after adding the stairs I felt as if something was missing. I tried to create ideas in my head of how I could add a message of motivation, but nothing came to mind until my roommate started talking. My roommate mentioned to me, “I am going to go study in the chinook building.” At that point my mind started running and told me to add text to the stairs image I had gotten from FreeImages website, also finding the soccer through FreeImages. The chinook building has a stair case where there are motivational words as you climb the stairs, which inspired me to do the same. Most of the process that I used through adobe was the Hue/Saturation and Magnetic Lasso Tool. It was very fun to play around with different colors, although I will recommend when using colors in your project to use a mouse, it was very hard for me not having a mouse, especially when using the magnetic lasso tool. Other than that, play with adobe! Use all the tools coming from the blur tool to using all the different brushes there are, you will be amazed with the differences those brushes can do.

Fear No Goal

My idea for the project is to describe the different stages I had to face to be able to continue to play a sport I enjoyed doing. I will do this by demonstrating images, videos, and audios of struggles I have faced and how it has helped me be a college student.

Finding my path through soccer

img_2032

During my middle and high school years I had a difficult time focusing on my studies and my education because of the difficulties I had with my legs. I thought I wouldn’t be able to join school activities or be engaged in after school sports because It was difficult for me to do exercise for long periods of time. Everything started in middle school when I was told I was flat footed and that one of my joints was misplaced. I was very worried because all I wanted was to play soccer, but my feet would not allow me to do so. The reason why my feet wouldn’t allow me was because every time I ran or kicked the ball my foot would freeze not letting me run or make any movement, my foot would not enable me to kick the ball because I had to use lots of force. Although I knew I was not allowed to play my favorite sport, I was up for the challenge. I wanted to play soccer that I did not tell my parents I had joined the soccer team (sorry mom, dad) because I knew they would not accept it. After a few days of joining the soccer team I had noticed I was the only girl who joined the team, it was very awkward and I knew I would probably get laughed at because “soccer is a boys sport” but, I was determined to give it a try. For a couple of weeks everything was going great, but towards the end of the season I started feeling pain in my foot and my foot would freeze frequently. I started getting worried and decided to go visit my doctor. Until this day, I do not regret playing soccer, but I do regret not telling my parents. In the past 4 years I have had two surgeries because I was not careful and did not think of consequences before deciding to play. I had a lot of struggles through the process of having surgery, while I was in surgery, and after having surgery. Although I did have some struggles I would say everything happens for a reason, and if I wouldn’t of gone through the struggles I went through, I probably wouldn’t be a WSU student today. With my personal story I plan to get permission from individuals who were there with me through the process of surgery and ask them a few questions on what were the ups and downs that they saw I faced while being through the process. Also, I plan to attach videos that I have of myself playing soccer, and how soccer motivated me to attend school and continue my education. Not only will I use audio and videos, but I will also show images and receive permission of any images that contain my teammates.

The following article describe some of the reasons why sports are a great resource for individuals and how it helps them keep motivated for their education.

Also, this article provides some of the benefits of why it is important for girls/women to be involved with sports, specially soccer.

Not only does a sport have benefits for the players that are involved in the sport, but it also has benefits for the audience watching the game. For several years that I had played soccer, my dad did not want to see my games because he did not want to see me getting hurt, but after a while he attended one of my games and he learned a lot. As a parent, it is important to understand what activities our children are involved in because not only could we learn from the sport, but we can also learn more about our children’s likes and dislikes.

About Me

img_1582

Hello everyone, my name is Brenda Yepez and I am a Junior at Washington State University, changing campuses from WSU Tri-cities. I have a passion towards sports, music, friendships, and involvement. My life started when I moved to the United States at the age of eight along with my three siblings and my parents. I was very excited because I was going to be able to attend school and join sports. The experienced continued when I engaged myself in soccer and my community by volunteering my time helping in summer camp events. I remember seeing so many kids who looked up to the volunteer members and calling us “teachers.” It gave me so much motivation and hope that I knew I wanted to attend college. Although I knew I wasn’t going to be able to receive much Financial Aid and needed to apply for scholarships, I knew that being involved would help me communicate with others and create connections. For the past four years I have been very involved with my community that lead me to great opportunities such as traveling for conferences, making new connections, and finding resources for my education. All these experiences made me realize that I wanted to attend WSU to receive my Bachelor’s degree in Communication in Society specialized in Risk and Crisis Communication.
